Liposuction is a method of body contouring, or sculpting
, involving removal of excess fat from various areas of the body. This procedure can be done to the abdomen, buttocks, hips, calves, knees, ankles, jowls, upper arms, check, neck, back, and thighs. In this article we will outline the process of liposuction and provide basic information help you decide whether or not you'd like to be a candidate.
Fat deposits may be caused by genetics, and as such, typically do not respond to dieting or exercise. In some cases, liposuction is a wonderful way to improve a patients quality of life.
The operation can be performed by itself or in combination with other plastic surgery procedures such as a tummy tuck or breast augmentation. In addition, it is also possible to perform on several areas during one operation.
Once you've decided this procedure is the right method for you, an operation date will be set. Using a marker, your physician will mark the areas from which the lipid will be removed. This acts as a sort of road map to help the surgeon plan out the operation.
The procedure itself is usually performed under general anesthesia, though options such as an epidural or intravenous sedation are also available. The decision of which sedation method to use depends entirely on which route you and your doctor feel most comfortable with. Though it also takes into account how long the surgery will last, as well as the specific area of the body the operation is being performed on.
Before any fat is removed, wetting solutions are infused into the area which is undergoing the operation. This solution contains saline and epinephrine, a substance used to constrict blood vessels in hopes of minimizing blood loss.
There are a few different ways in which the surgeon can go about the procedure:
Traditional - This involves inserting a thin, long tube through a small incision to vacuum out the lipid cells. The tube is moved back and forth in order to break up the lipid layer before finally sucking up the broken down matter.
Ultrasound - Using ultrasound technologies to break up the fat layer, this method uses sound waves which do less potential harm to blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. The result is less swelling, bruising, and pain during recovery.
Power-assisted - This method uses a motorized tube to break up the fat layer
Other techniques include lasers, and water jets.
