In the coming decade, the demographic shifts within the labor force, will be less favorable for low-skilled workers. Fifty-five percent of adults with Below Basic prose literacy did not graduate from high school, compared to 15 percent of adults in the general population. Twenty-two percent of adults were Below Basic literacy skills-indicating they possess no more than the most simple and concrete literacy skills. In addition, the nation's prison population includes disproportionate percentages of adults with certain demographic and other characteristics associated with low levels of literacy; compared to the general population.

Pauline is a 52-year old mother of three children. She is a single parent, who had her first child when she was 16 years old. Pauline had to drop out of high school with her first pregnancy. She has limited basic skills, reading and comprehending documents has become a challenge for her. And, she's always in a constant state of depression, because she lacks skills most employers require. It is getting harder for her to keep a job. She wants to get her high school diploma. And, possibly learn a new vocational trade. But she lacks the confidence for planning and meeting her goals. Life has been very hard for her, working as a telemarketer. Many times, she has had to use community support services, to make ends meet. You may know someone like Pauline.

There is a substantial gap between the skills that employers require and those that disadvantaged women possess. Jobs that did not require a college degree, 70 percent required good customer service skills, 61 percent required workers to read or write paragraphs, 51 percent required computer experience, and 65 percent required a knowledge of math. As you can see, literacy education for disadvantaged women are all to important.

Whether it is calculating a 20 percent discount from a calculator or reading a road map. There are many adults who have limited basic skills. Despite rising college enrollment levels. How can this problem be fixed? First, talk with the person you know that's lacking literacy skills. While, indeed, it is a sensitive subject. But, for the most part, people really appreciate someone caring about them. Would you have time to tutor someone? Why not volunteer your time, skills or literacy lesson plans to make life better for someone else. If you feel uncomfortable tutoring in your home or theirs ... why not meet at an open place, like the library? The best gift we can give to someone, is to show that - we care. Not only, have you helped this person, to learn the most profound human victory ... self sufficiency. You have also made a new friend for life!
