Lithium Battery Pack

Lithium battery packs are sets of lithium batteries or individual battery cells configured

to deliver the required voltage, capacity or power density for various applications.

Lithium is the lightest known metal and produces the highest energy density per unit of weight. Lithium batteries are therefore ideal for applications that require high voltage densities. These batteries can produce voltages ranging from 1.5 V to 3.7 V, which is more than double that of standard alkaline batteries. The relentless efforts of the computer industry to increase battery capacities and the growing spread of electronic devices for personal use have, in turn, spurred a spate of technological advances in lithium battery packs since the 1990s.

The term lithium battery covers a family of chemistries comprising different combinations of electrolytes and cathodes. The most common lithium batteries use lithium or lithium compounds as the anode (negative electrode), manganese dioxide as the cathode (positive electrode), and lithium salts dissolved in an organic solvent as the electrolyte. A very important sub-group within the lithium battery family is the lithium ion battery. The rechargeable battery packs of mobile phones are the most common example of this. Another important type of lithium cell is the lithium-thionyl chloride cell. These are generally used for industrial/commercial purposes and are usually hard to get hold of in the consumer market. The typical uses for these cells include long duration, low current applications such as wireless alarm systems, pacemakers or other implantable medical devices.

Lithium battery packs are used in a host of electronic devices such as laptops, camcorders, digital cameras, communication equipment, UPS, battery operated toys, etc. Lithium battery packs for common consumer applications are available in all sorts of shapes and sizes, from the button type cells used in calculators to the cylinder type battery cells for larger devices. The high energy densities of lithium cells also allow the manufacture of single cell battery packs, such as those in mobile phones.
