Live A Fuller Life With Rheumatoid Arthritis

Before I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, I was subjected to numerous blood tests

, particularly used to rule out rheumatoid arthritis. Because I was trying to be active in understanding what was going on with my health, I started researching the latter condition.

I have come to realize what a tremendous challenge it is to live every day with such an ailment--even more so than having fibromyalgia. And having such extreme chronic pain and fatigue can make it hard for individuals to live full, independent lives. But it truly can be done. Let me share what I have learned.

Avoid self-medicating. The pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis--often shortened to the acronym RA--can often be intense and even excruciating, but falling back on taking too many over-the-counter drugs or prescriptions meant for treating other pain (such as pain following a major surgery) can lead to other health problems or drug addiction.

Instead, make sure that you discuss your options thoroughly with your doctor or rheumatologist. Understand potential side effects and interactions with other medications you may be taking.

Most drugs given to RA patients are anti-inflammatory and/or steroids, both of which help keep your body from producing agents from your immune system that attack your joints. But that also makes you more susceptible to infection, which means you will have to take extra precautions to keep yourself healthy.

Many meds formulated to specifically treat RA have very serious side effects, so you need to weigh the risks with the benefits. Never let your doctor push you into taking a prescription that you don't feel comfortable with.

Make sure that your family members and friends are educated on your condition. Because of your symptoms, you may miss your share of family get-togethers and outings with buddies. They need to recognize that it is nothing personal, and that you need their empathy now more than ever. Don't be afraid to ask for their help. They love you, and they want to see you happy. Anyone who takes the attitude that you need to "suck it up," is not worth your time and trouble.

You might consider bringing in a home care service. They can assist you with a variety of activities around the house, including cooking and cleaning, along with running errands, getting your mail, and doing the grocery shopping, which can be incredibly helpful when your symptoms are especially intense.

Be fierce, confident, and persistent. This is your life--don't let a disease take control of it away from you.
