Revenge is the order of the day on February 2 as Liverpool seek to turn over the dismal away defeat to the Potters earlier this season.

It was Stoke's first win against the Reds since 1984 and as the season continues, they are proving to be cagey customers in their third season in the top flight.

Defender Jamie Carragher looks set to return to action after a three month lay-off as the Reds aim to have a full strength side on show at Anfield for this game.

This could be prove to be a pivotal game for manager Roy Hodgson as Liverpool's season continues to have a somewhat indifferent and uncharacteristic run of results compared to previous seasons.

On balance, Liverpool's home record suggests that this game is a done deal before the start as Stoke's dismal away record has been poor. But with a recent home defeat to the rejuvenated Newcastle United. And striker on form Kenywne Jones, who took apart the Liverpool defence with ease in their last meeting in November. This game between the two mid table sides may well depend on stuttering striker Fernando Torres to fire on all cylinders to ensure a comfortable victory at Anfield.

Despite success in the Europa league, Hodgson appears to have yet to grasp how to steady the ship in the premier league - as Liverpool have failed to string together a run of back to back wins. This appears to point that the reds are an unlikely team to add silverware to their cabinet when they last won a trophy in 2005.

Interestingly, from the only two of the last five meetings, the Anfield outfit has won the contest between these football giants - with Stoke managing to frustrate them on a regular basis.

As the transfer market opens, this may well further complicate what seems to be an already broken conundrum of a lack lustre Liverpool side. Stoke Manager Tony Pulis may feel despite incoming improvements to the Liverpool squad and his own tweaks to the Potters. He may well have the right to think he should come away with a point or a cheeky win as Liverpool's defence has yet to find the right balance all season.

Founded in 1863, the Potters are the oldest club in the premier league as they celebrate their 148th season of football. The Staffordshire side also share something in common with Liverpool. As both clubs have American owners in the moniker of John Henry and Austin Artex.

As the season draws to its close this game could prove crucial to both teams as one of them may well be in contention for a European place or even fighting for premiership survival - where Stoke will be aiming to make it four seasons in a row in the top flight.

But with the game being so open in play on their last meeting. Hodgson's last experience will look to improve on the catastrophic errors made by his team in their last meeting, to turn this result into a win for the home side.
