Having a septic tank or a cesspit can take a bit of getting used to

They can be a lot different to mains drains and although if you live in a city or a built up area I would be very shocked if you have one there is a high chance you'll have a septic tank or cesspit if you live in the countryside or a small village. Firstly if you're unsure of what a septic tank is, it's a tank which is buried underground near your house. All of the waste water from the house which includes shower, toilet, drain pipes water etc will be collected in this tank. It has different chambers in which will allow the solider waste products to float to the bottom and cleaner water to seep out of the tank into what's call a leach field which is the ground around the septic tank.
You'll need to have waste tank emptying services around once a year. Although some houses dependent on how much they are used and how many people live in the household may be able to go longer it's better safe than sorry and it's far better to have emptied it early than have back flow issues!
You can't put sanitary products or anything similar down the toilet as this could cause blockage and you'd have to call for a service.
I would also suggest checking the levels if you've had excessive rain as the rain water can get into the tank and a lot of water in a short space of time can cause blockage.
I would also check that youre not allowing any food waste to go down the drains.
