Living In The Town Of Chipping Ongar

The town of Chipping Ongar, which includes the parish 'Ongar'

, is located in Essex and is twinned with the town of Cerizay in France. With an area population of around six thousand people - predominantly white British - the town boasts a proud travel and trade history. Indeed, during the Middle Ages, Ongar was a bustling market town, which even had its own castle.

Standing from the eleventh century, up until the eighteenth, Eustace II, Count of Boulogne's Ongar Castle has sadly been reduced to a motte and has given itself over to the natural elements. However, the site can still be accessed via a public footpath.

Ongar is nestled in between many larger notable towns, such as Brentwood, Epping, Chelmsford and Harlow. However, the area itself is the home to a whole host of retail outlets such as Sainsbury's, Tesco, Nisa, Barclay's and HSBC. Residents also have a wide range of restaurants, public houses and takeaways to choose from in the immediate locale. Remnants of the old market style lay out mean that local shoppers can take full advantage of short term on street parking, making shopping more convenient and accessible all round.

Central London is less than thirty miles from Ongar. Harlow, Brentwood and Chelmsford are all within a fifteen mile radius. The M11 provides a route to Harlow, the M25 will take travellers to Brentwood, while the A414 connects Ongar and Chelmsford.

The nearest underground station to Ongar is located at Epping because Chipping Ongar Central Line underground station itself has been closed since the mid nineties. However, the town does run regular bus routes, both local services and routes into Harlow, Brentwood or Chelmsford.

Ongar has many claims to fame, including being the final resting place for Jane Taylor, who was the author of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star." Acclaimed authors, Will Self and Ade Edmonson, both also featured references to Chipping Ongar in their works.

There are a number of picturesque locations dotted around Ongar, which are ideal for wedding receptions. Blake Hall, for example, is over two hundred years old and set in secluded gardens and woodland.

The name 'Ongar' actually means 'grass land' and, given that Ongar is indeed set in the district of Epping and is less than four miles from Epping Forest itself, this comes as no surprise. Orienteering, mountain biking, horse riding, running and rambling are all popular activities in Epping Forest which the residents of Ongar can take full advantage of.

Those with an eye for curious landmarks may also enjoy a trip to the nearby Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker. Situated just a few miles from Ongar, Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker is a relic from the Cold War. Now open to the public, with shops and refreshments, the bunker would have held approximately six hundred government officials, including the Prime Minister, had nuclear war broken out. Over seventy foot underground and set in ten foot of concrete, the site is certainly worth taking the short trip from Ongar to visit.
