By definition, a yuppie is a "young urban professional"

. This is term given to young upwardly mobile individuals between ages of twenty and thirty. As a pop culture term coined in the 1980's, these are often college graduate young people employed in high paying jobs.

The main cultural characteristic of yuppies is their obsession regarding social status among their peers and their high end personal consumption. These are often seen as purchasing name brand clothing and accessories, high tech toys and being seen in the popular and high end restaurants and clubs. For others, this sort of behavior has been viewed as materialistic, excessive and vainglorious.

While this may be a cultural phenomenon, there are many individuals in this social stratum that is saddled with a debilitating disease. Diabetes is silent condition, when left untreated, would result in complications such as cardiovascular disease, renal and kidney distress and other health issues. This is brought about by the body's inability to metabolize the hormone insulin. Insulin is important for cells to be able to process blood glucose for its normal processes. When the cells do not have fuel to use for its operations, they wither and die, leading to organ failure and even death.

So now there is a new class of yuppies, the diabetic yuppie. With this debilitating disease, many activities of the yuppie cannot be enjoyed. These include sampling whatever food that is most popular nowadays, as diabetics need to be wary of the food they eat as their body is unable to regulate blood sugar. Also, night clubbing would be a definite no-no as diabetics would be under great stress from the long nights, boozing and smoking as well as recreational drug use common in this scene. Another damper on the yuppie lifestyle is the travel as well adventure trips, for the dangers involved in these activities would further complicate the life threat risk with this disease.

On the other hand, having the latest diabetes gadgets that money can buy can still uplift the diabetic yuppie. Having the latest insulin delivery system can be leg up as a status symbol for the diabetic yuppie. Also, maintaining a healthy lifestyle resulting in a better physique as well as mindset can be one of the best ways of maintaining the yuppie lifestyle while being a diabetic. This can be done through yoga and other meditative exercises, exploring vegetarian and vegan cuisines and overall wellness would not only keep the individual within the yuppie social scene, but keep the diabetes in check for the individual.

For parents of yuppie diabetics, what is important is communication between your child and yourself as to their current health condition. You need to be supportive of their activities yet still be mindful of the medical attention needed by diabetics as they live with this condition. Also, remind them always to have identification stating their special medical condition. As a final note, do make sure that your contact numbers are easily accessible in your yuppie diabetic child's identification papers so that when an emergency arises, you can easily be there for your child's needs in overcoming this silent debilitating condition.
