We are living in tough economic times. People are losing their jobs, the housing market is unstable, and more and more people are facing bankruptcy. Now more than ever it is important to live within our means and save for a rainy day, because those rainy days may be upon us sooner than we think.

So many people are trying to recover from the days of spending freely. People built large homes, drove fancy cars, and took expensive vacations. But does any of that matter now if you can't pay your mortgage or go on a vacation at all? Remember the old days when an overnight stay in a neighboring town was considered a vacation? Maybe we should turn back the clock and pattern our lives after that model.

It is possible to have a wonderful live on a meager salary. It is all in your attitude and how you approach things. Do you need a fancy car with a large lease payment? Or would it be better to drive an older model that you own outright? Getting rid of a car payment can be a large savings every month. You could put the money you save into a savings account and pay cash for your next car. Think of the money you would save on interest payments alone!

The same holds true for vacations. Yes, your family would love an all inclusive trip to Hawaii, but can you afford it? If you have to put all or some of your trip on a credit card it is time to step back and think again. Couldn't your family have just as much fun camping in the mountains or spending a few days at a nearby lake? Memories aren't made by the location you are at. They are made by the people you are with. You can enjoy your family more if you aren't constantly thinking of the debt you created to make the trip!

Are you saving for the unexpected? Many people spend every dime they make with no thought for the future. When something unexpected comes up, they use credit cards or refinance their home to get by. While there are some emergencies where you might have to use these resources, they should be used carefully. Try to avoid unneeded debt at all times. You don't need the added stress of more debt when times are tough.

It is possible to have a great life while living within your salary. After all, happiness is not purchased, it is experienced.
