Local Marketing Benefits Everyone

We just moved into a new house. It is in a great neighborhood with fantastic neighbors. Our new home is located two blocks from restaurants, grocery stores, and other shops. It was part of the reason we chose to move to this location. One of the first things our new neighbors did for us was to give us a compilation of all the neighbors' names and phone numbers. In addition to this list was an itemized list of the local restaurants, phone numbers, and menus. It was the kind of neighborliness we had hoped form. We appreciated their desire to keep the feeling of "community." It is through this and other types of local marketing that we will keep this area a tight knit, family oriented place.

The internet has pulled us in the other direction. We spend hours online talking with our friends all over the world, some of whom we have never even met. We shop online, finding it much preferable to fighting the holiday rush in our local stores. We read our news online, rather than in a newspaper. We spend hours entertaining ourselves with everything that is available online. All of this is turning us away from our local community. But, the very internet that has turned us away from the neighborhood could be the resource to revive it!

Why not use the internet for local marketing and focus at least some attention back into the community where you live. When the local neighborhood thrives, it is good for everyone that lives there. If you are a local business, send out emails to people in your neighborhood. There are plenty of email lists available that can be sorted by geography. Maybe even offer a discount or other benefit to a customer in your local area; these customers will be great candidates for repeat business.

If you are a buyer, begin to look at the companies that are marketing locally. What's more, use your social network of friends around the world to help your own community. When you find something special from a local retailers, put it up on Facebook or tweet about it and draw business from your friends into your own neighborhood.

Focus on your neighborhood is simply good business. It is also good citizenship because building up the local business community is good for all that live within it.
