Local and National UK Radio Stations Thriving on the World Wide Web
UK Radio has come a long way since the first tentative signals were broadcast by Marconi, and without providing an accurate count there are several hundred UK radio stations broadcasting across the whole of the frequency spectrum, from short wave through long wave, medium wave and of course FM VHF.
All of these UK radio stations are broadcasting using a medium that has been exploited from the early years of the 20th century, but with the coming of age of the internet in this broadband enabled world, high fidelity stereo broadcasts are now available to anyone that has a broadband internet connection.
All genres are catered for as well as a huge selection of talk only UK radio stations, and while they are increasing in popularity, the most listened to UK radio stations are those that air an eclectic mix of music and chat (although some of the presenters have TOO much chat).
Classic country stations and modern RnB stations vie for listeners with easy listening as well as soul and middle of the road.
Many radio stations in the UK are small locally owned radio stations broadcasting on low power such as Wayland FM in the county of Norfolk, England while some are behemoths born out of the pirate radio station heyday in the 1960's with the birth of radio's 1, 2, 3 and 4 from the BBC.
The BBC had to mend its ways to a booming market of affluent teenagers and youth market and the recent introduction of miniaturized transistor radios (remember those).
In the intervening time the BBC has captured a large share of the UK radio listening public; however in recent years since the advent of commercial radio stations, the first of which was LBC (London Broadcasting Company) which started broadcasting in the London area and was the start of what was to become a radio station revolution that has carried on to the present day.
Now in the relatively brave new world of the internet and with many people owning and using small broadband enabled hand held devices, mobile phones and laptops, as well as home computers, the internet radio revolution is in full swing, again changing the face of radio broadcasting and bringing it kicking and screaming like a new born child into the glare of a 21st century morning.
The next revolution in radio broadcasting, not just for the UK but for the wide world in general is going to come via the biggest machine the world has ever seen the internet.
