Although Marty and his wife made things work he was looking to the day

, which came just six years ago, when he was able to quit his permanent staff position and transition to a locum tenens nurse practitioner. With his oldest child finishing up his final year of college and the younger one getting married, it was no longer necessary for Marty to stay home in southern Florida. Now he travels with his wife whenever possible while still doing the job he loves.

For Marty the best part of his being a locum tenens nurse practitioner is his flexibility. For example, just a few weeks ago the couple left for a stay in Western New York State. While Marty's wife spends the next seven months reconstructing a major highway he will be working two temporary assignments of three months apiece. In the one month of downtime Marty might be able to pick up another short-term assignment but if not, he will enjoy the time off to see some of the sites.

When the couple returns home in December Marty will have no trouble filling his schedule for the winter months. And since he lives only 30 miles from downtown Miami most of the work he finds will be within a reasonable driving distance from his home. Marty's story as a locum tenens nurse practitioner is not as unusual as his family circumstances. The locum tenens industry is growing by leaps and bounds. To fill temporary staffing needs many medical facilities are hiring locum tenens workers rather than asking remaining staff to work longer hours.

On the supply side, there is growing interest among medical professionals to forgo traditional private practice or institutional employment in favor of locum tenens positions. Working as a locum tenens nurse practitioner, for example, allows an individual to meet new people, see new places, and rise to new challenges. While it's true that locum tenens work is not for everyone, it is a growing trend that a good number of professionals are finding makes the perfect job.
