London Transport Coping Well On Busiest Days Of Olympics

London's transport system has coped well with the huge crowds on Super Saturday - one of the busiest days of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Transport for London said 4.4 million passengers used the Tube on Friday. That broke the figure of 4.31 million set on Thursday, which surpassed the record set on Wednesday, when 4.25 million used the network. In the same week last year, daily Tube passenger numbers were around 3.7m to 3.8m.

The previous busiest day in the networks history was December 9, 2011 when passenger numbers were boosted by Christmas shoppers.

The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) carried more than 500,000 passengers for the first time, also on Friday, up 70 per cent on normal daily levels.

Barclays Cycle Hire recorded 1m hires in July for the first time, with almost 47,000 hires on July 26 - the day before the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games - the most hires in one day since the scheme launched more than two years ago. Bike rentals have totalled just over 14 million in the 24 months since the scheme began; around 600,000 hires a month on average.

London Overground passenger numbers are up more than a quarter, at 27 per cent, week on week, and the Emirates Air Line, which opened on June 28, also saw new record passenger numbers on Saturday, at 24,451.

In spite of all the predictions, there was a good service on all London Underground lines as hundreds of thousands of people made their way to events across the capital, on a day when 25 gold medals are up for grabs, including for Team GB heptathlon star Jessica Ennis at the Olympic Park in Stratford.

Train operators have provided more than two million extra seats this weekend as the Olympics builds up to what is predicted to be one of its busiest phases, the Association of Train Operating Companies (Atoc) said.

London's transport operators were given a vote of confidence by commuter group London Travelwatch.

Sharon Grant, the group's chairwoman, said that, while there had been some problems, the disruption caused had been minimal.

"So far our transport operators have excelled themselves, in managing both unprecedented passenger flows, and the expected minor breakdowns on the system," she said.

"London commuters have also responded very well indeed to their advice and deserve some recognition."
