Loneliness And Isolation - A Deadly Combo
Loneliness and isolation are not really the same thing
, but they can have a very unhealthy relationship linking them together. In order to avoid the negative effects of these two things, one must first understand what loneliness is, and what isolation is, and then one must know how the two correlate. If you feel like you may suffer from loneliness, then it is important that you observe what effect isolation has on your life. Are you always sealing yourself off from friends or family? If so, you may want to rethink the way that you spend your free time, because it may be taking a detrimental toll on your health.
What loneliness is?
Loneliness is generally a negative state no matter how you look at it. When one is lonely, he feels there is a void in his life. Lack of fulfillment is probably the best way to describe loneliness, and that lack of fulfillment usually extends from the fact that the individual has no one to share his life experiences with. No friends or family or spouse. One may be able to get by without one of these elements, but any more than that, and there is a direct risk of slipping into loneliness. A committed relationship is generally the best way to overcome loneliness, but it can also be the cause of one's loneliness should it work out. One must tread very carefully and know himself before he gives his heart over to someone.
What isolation is?
Isolation is more of a neutral state in that it can be a good thing just as easily as it can cause one loneliness and depression. Isolation is basically the physical state of being by oneself. Everyone needs a little isolation, or "me time" at some point in their lives. The danger is when isolation becomes the only state they ever experience. This can affect how they relate to other people, and it can morph into loneliness as one struggles to define the negative emotions without anyone to bounce them off of. To avoid isolation's negative qualities, one really should surround themselves with friends, family, or committed relationships that fill in the gaps inevitably left by isolation.
How isolation and loneliness correlate
Once you know what loneliness and isolation are, it is easy to see how one can lead to another. And when both are working in one's life, it is very important to take a step back and assess the way one spends one's time. If you can fill in some of that isolation with meaningful and constructive friendships or relationships, then you stand a much better chance of avoiding the pitfalls of loneliness and depression. And in doing so, you could just save your life.
