Ask anyone who has ever felt lonely (this is easy enough since we all have gone through such periods at some time or another) and the prevailing idea for most of them will likely be one of a sense or state of isolation. It is true of course that most people who are lonely feel that way because of the distinct lack of human contact, although there are a lot more reasons why people feel lonely. There are many instances wherein a person surrounded almost constantly by other people still feels the heavy crush of loneliness. For such people, no amount of human contact can dispel the overwhelming feeling of isolation that comes from being misunderstood or unappreciated. People who fit this loneliness definition may as well be alone for all the good that human companionship gives them.

Traditional advice for dealing with loneliness is to go out and seek the company of people you have a shared history with. If you have been feeling lonely and seem to be having difficulty lifting yourself out of that mood, you may well be surprised at how quickly and how effectively touching base with old friends can lift your spirits.

Loneliness is often a temporary condition, and the solution can often be easy to achieve. However, there are people for whom loneliness is part and parcel of everyday life, and no amount of social activity or chats with friends can do anything to help. While relatively minor instances of loneliness can often be resolved without having to put in a lot of effort, loneliness that results from a tragic occurrence (such as the death of a loved one, for instance) or from a mental or emotional condition aren't as easily rectified. The loss of a beloved family member can be pretty devastating under any circumstances, and for many people, the classic definition of loneliness is the inevitable result.

Loneliness doesn't have to be all bad however. In most cases, feelings of loneliness are simply signs of your brain telling you that you need to seek out human companionship. If you yourself in such a situation, simply spending an afternoon with friends or family can be all you need to solve most problems with loneliness.

You can also turn things around and give your loneliness meaning by helping out others in need. By focusing your energies on people in need, you can make something positive happen out of your loneliness, instead of going through a vicious cycle of loneliness that will likely have no quick end in sight.
