Loneliness In Women And The Risks Involved
As unlikely as it may seem, loneliness in women can actually bring about a wide array of serious physical problems
. The effects of loneliness in women in the emotional and mental sense are almost common knowledge, but it is only recently that science has begun to unravel the mysterious link between women and physical health. For men as well as women, loneliness might just be a significant factor in the development of certain diseases and even premature death.
Sounds like something out of a romance novel, doesn't it? Although woman and loneliness is a mix that has long been regarded as tragic in an emotional sense, few people in this day and age would make a connection between an emotional state (admittedly a potentially serious one) and actual physiological effects. However, scientists at the University of California would probably beg to differ.
In research conducted on test subjects aged 45 and up, A team of researchers led by Steve Cole found that people who described themselves as chronically lonely were at increased risk of developing inflammations throughout key areas of the body, particularly in the organs. When this happens, the white blood cells of the immune system basically kick into overdrive as a reaction to abnormal cellular function. This is a recipe for disaster that can lead to a host of serious health problems, including immune system deficiency disorders, heart related diseases, high blood pressure, and even certain forms of cancer. If you had previously thought that the effects of loneliness in women affected only the emotions at worse, the results of these studies suggest that the condition can be much more serious than the occasional crying jags.
Women and loneliness can also come together in a tragic-and potentially lethal-scenario in which the woman's health suffers due to more immediate factors. Many people who are lonely don't have the benefit of constant companionship, and this in itself can place them at increased risk of accidents and other mishaps which close contact with other people can prevent. People who live alone don't have anyone to rush them to the hospital if they fall and break a hip, or call an ambulance when they are in need of medical assistance. This lack of options in case of emergencies can further exacerbate the feelings of loneliness in women.
Loneliness may also cause women to make choices that they normally wouldn't make. This includes anything from risky behavior undertaken for purposes of immediate gratification to lifestyle or relationship choices that may have long-term negative or disruptive effects. For such women, lonely is seen as an unbearable reality for which risky behavior is a much more worthy alternative.
Of course loneliness can several affect mental and emotional health as well, even without taking the physiological aspect into consideration. Constant depression, apathy, and overwhelming sense of isolation are all closely tied in with loneliness, and their combined effects can be devastating. In the worse case scenarios, loneliness may require more intensive psychological attention from a qualified professional.
