Longtail or ShortTail Keywords for SEO?

Longtail or ShortTail Keywords for SEO?

Longtail or ShortTail Keywords for SEO?

I really love organic search engine marketing. Where else can you get a ton of highly targeted visitors to your web site, day after day, all for free? Nowhere, that's where!

When it comes to search engine optimization and search engine marketing, keyword research is the name of the game. If you pick the right keywords, your site can shoot up in the rankings quickly and easily (relatively speaking of course). If you pick the wrong ones, then all your work can be fruitless!

Which brings us to the crux of the matter; should you focus on longtail keywords or shortail keywords? That is the million dollar question and its what I'd like to talk about in this article today.

First of all, what's the difference between these two things?

Well, a shortail keyword is something short, usually one or two words. Like Dog Training.

A longtail keyword is usually much longer, usually three to six words or more. It usually contains the base shortail keyword as well.

A good example is "dog training tips St. Louis". See the difference between the two?

Why do we care about this? Because short tail keywords usually get searched for much much more each month at the major search engines, but are usually incredibly competitive to get your site listed under. Why is that? Because everyone wants to get their web site listed under the short tail words for that exact reason, they get more traffic.

Longtail words, on the other hand, usually get searched for MUCH less each month, but at the same time it's usually much much easier to get your site listed under them because there's not nearly as much competition (and sometimes no competition at all!) because not many people search for those keywords.

So what kind of numbers are we talking about here? Well, it varies obviously, but a short tail word might get searched for 100,000 times per month or more while a short tail word may get searched for 500 to 1,000 times per month.

I like long tails much more. Why? Because it's so much easier to get listed under them. Many times, actually most times, its impossible to get listed under short tail words, you'd need thousands and thousands of backlinks; on the other hand it might just take a handful of backlinks to get listed under the long tail keywords.

And if I find 20 long tails, and they each get searched for 1,000 times per month, and I can easily get my site ranked first under that word, then that's the lions share of 20,000 potential site visitors to my site each and every month. And if 20, why not 40? Or 100? It just takes research to dig up those keywords.

I'm sure you can see the awesome potential of this kind of SEO strategy!
