People considering this as a career need to be in good physical shape. The job requires many hours of standing, bending over and assisting patients who are having the procedure done.

To become an Ultrasound Technician one must have a two-year associate degree or two year certification program, which is available at many universities. Training in this field is also available from technical/vocational schools, as well as a number of hospitals which also offer certification programs. Some people further their education and study to obtain a bachelor's degree in ultrasonography at a four year college. This improves their chances of securing a higher paying job in the field.

Whichever choice of education is chosen it is a job that is self-satisfying and work that is in high demand. No state licensing is required, however one must be registered with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. To be registered with this organization one must take and pass a written examination. Proof of this certification must be presented when applying for a position.

As an Ultrasound Technician one works with ultrasound equipment, which produces images of the inside of a patient's body. These reports are required by members of the medical profession when there is the possibility of something wrong that cannot be seen from outside the patient's body. This is often the case with unborn babies or cardiovascular patients.


The technician must know how to adjust the ultrasound machine's settings as well as how to correctly position a patient's body in order to obtain the right pictures. Clear and concise pictures are required in order for the physician involved to be able to make a proper diagnosis. It is also the technician's responsibility to keep accurate records of all test results to submit to the physician in charge of the case.

The job prospects for people looking at an Ultrasound Technician career are excellent. It is expected that the demand for people who have chosen a Ultrasound Technician Career to increase as those currently working in the field retire. In addition, new equipment is constantly being added to the hospitals and other places where they are used. Having technicians who have knowledge regarding operating this equipment makes them even more in demand for the job.
