, roller blinds don't look like Grandma's old ones nor are they as finicky. The new designs, rolling mechanisms and materials are trendy, sophisticated and make a fantastic decor improvement for any office or home.
The term roller "blinds" is rarely used today as these window shades are available in varying opaqueness. When fully extended, some filter light softly through them. Some provide complete blackout advantages while others provide a semi-opaqueness that allows only vague silhouettes to be seen through. Most manufacturers will offer lifetime guarantees for their products.
Installation might be a little tricky if you do it yourself, but it is manageable. Almost all companies provide adequate installation guides with their product. That being said, however, it may be to your advantage to have the window shades installed professionally or at least by someone who is experienced in the technique to ensure proper function and fit.
Fitting these window shades correctly depends entirely on accurate measurement. The width you require is ultimately the width of the head rail. The fabric hanging from the head rail will always be a little narrower by approximately 1/2 inch on either side of it.
Depending on where the shade will hang, the head-rail should equal in measurement to the inside or outside of the window-casing. Just as with windows, there are standard width ranges for shades. Sometimes if a window is too wide for one shade and would require two, it would be good to consider a different window dressing altogether. Either that or decide to have a seam sewn down the middle of two shades to bind them together to get the correct width.
The desired length of the shade must also be decided upon before ordering. Some shades have plain hems that will minimize the amount of light leakage if that is the effect desired. If this is not a concern, there are several attractive trims and hems to select from such as fringes, scallops or many combinations of both.
While on the topic of hems, the operation of pulling the shade up or down is no longer dependent upon on pulling a cord attached to the hem to trigger a fragile spring mechanism. The window shades of today are motor operated. Some have remote control options that is an attractive quality for bed-ridden folk or anyone whose physical abilities are compromised in any way. Some have a manual mechanism made of a continuously looping cord to raise and lower the shade without fuss.
Some adjustment mechanisms have self-timers. As a safety measure, accompanying mechanisms or guides can be attached to the wall or inside the window casing. These modernizations help with consistent positioning and possibly avoid fabric staining or damage.
Vinyl-fiberglass, cellulose-fiber, polyesters, and foam-acrylic are the materials from which most shades are constructed today. For instance, foam-acrylic is added to the backing of a shade to absorb light in order to ensure the best blackout effect. The side of any shade facing the street could have a white finish or it could match the side that faces the inside of the room.
Depending on your needs and style preferences, panels can be sheer, semi-sheer, semi-opaque, and opaque or have a total room darkening capability. Looks and textures can be woven like cotton or canvas, mimic natural fibers such as suede or bamboo, or be patterned such as paisley or brocade, etc. The colors available are as extensive as the rainbow.
