Looking for Winter's Best Beach Walks
What is the first thing that comes into your mind when you think of a beach
? You probably picture beach towels, skimpy clothing suitable for dipping in and out of the sea and lots of sun tan lotion as well.
But there is a common misconception that beaches are only built for the summer months. In truth, they are just as exciting and wonderful to visit during the winter as well. They may require you to wear some very different clothing at this time of year, but it doesn't make them any less enjoyable. Provided you are wrapped up warm you can see a very different side to them.
Cumbria might bring to mind images of lakes and rolling countryside, but it has its share of beaches as well. One of the prettiest and most dramatic belongs to St Bees. The stony beach eventually gives way to sand and gives you the chance to wander along a nice stretch of gorgeous coastline.
If you want to head down into the foot of the country you will be able to explore the delights of Church Cove. This is stunning at any time of the year, but since you are in Cornwall this probably won't come as a surprise. It may be small but it has more than enough atmosphere and rugged charm, especially during the colder winter months. Don't miss this chance to wrap up and enjoy the surroundings.
On the northern coast of Devon there is a huge beach that stretches almost all the way from Appledore to Westward Ho. It is the depth and length of this beach that really takes the breath away. Be sure to wrap up warm as the wind tends to hit you as you drop down onto the sandy stretches that run into the sea. The best thing to do is to walk from Appledore into Westward Ho, grab a bite to eat and a drink and then walk back again. It's a bracing experience!
Moving up into Wales you can explore Llanddona Beach as well. This beach has won awards and it isn't hard to see why. As you walk to the beach itself you come upon it from higher ground so be prepared to stand and stare before you actually tackle it for yourself.
It's plain to see that the beaches in the UK are just as good to visit during the winter as they are during the summer. In fact on many occasions they can be better as they're typically not crowded. What's more,
cheap train tickets make it easy to reach any beach you want to see nearby or even further afield. All you have to do is make your choice and start exploring, unwrapping a delightful winter walk in the process.
