A central figure of the great epic, Ramayana, Lord Rama claimed to be the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu, the preserver of life

. The Ramayana is considered the soul of the country, India. It states there all the principles that men should follow to become ideal citizens of the world. He was the first child of the king of Ayodhya, King Dashratha. His mother was Queen Kausilya. He had three other brothers from the other wives of his father namely Bharata, Shatrughna and Lakshmana.

There were many exploits of Lord Rama and his brother, Lakshmana was always at his side. Lakshmana is said to the incarnation of Anata Sesha who is the eternal companion of Lord Vishnu to accompany him on his stay on earth in human form. Among his famous exploits included the killing of the demon Tarka together with her sons, Subahu and Mareech using a weapon given by Saint Vishwamrita as they ate travelers who pass along the dense forest.

After that, they went to Mithila who was ruled by a wise king named Janak. At that day, the wise king had arranged a "svayamvaraa" which is an old custom that lets the bride choose her own husband among different suitors. Anyone who could string Lord Shiva's bow will have the honor of marrying his daughter, Sita. The princess was actually the incarnation of Lord Vishnu's consort, Lakshmi. No one was able to do it but Lord Rama who was able to lift it with one hand then bent it so hard that the famous bow broke.

He was able to marry Sita. His other brothers were able to marry Sita's sisters. They returned to Ayodhya where they lived happily. When it was time for King Dashrath to pass crown, he wanted to leave the whole kingdom to Rama, his favorite among his sons. Unfortunately, Kaikeyi, the youngest and third wife of King Dashrath, wanted the throne for her own son, Bharat.

The King owed a debt of gratitude to Kaikeyi and promised her two wishes. She was actually influence by her evil maidservant, Manthara, to the point that she was able to brainwash the young queen in asking for the banishment of his favorite son for fourteen years and put Bharat on the throne instead. The old king was so sad about this but could do nothing as he had made his promise. Lord Rama openly accepted his exile as he believes that obeying his own father is his highest duty as a son
