Ever since researchers discovered "clock genes," a set of genes that have a daily cycle to them and help regulate the body's natural daily rhythm, scientist have been looking at how disrupting these genes can affect the body; new research done in Columbus by Laura Fonken at Ohio State University sheds new light on obesities link to sleep.

The researchers had three groups of mice that were exposed to a normal pattern of day and night, an all day (light) schedule, or a normal day but "dim" night schedule. All of the mice were given the same amount of daily exercise and calories.

Both groups of mice that were exposed to the altered schedule (all day schedule, or dim night schedule) gained more weight than the mice exposed to the normal schedule. Exactly why or how this happened is not yet known, but the researchers think that it might be due to desynchronizing the mice's normal daily routines, possibly leading to decreased daily regular activity.

According to lead researcher, Dr. Fonken, it could be that the mice subjected to these altered living schedules simply felt worse over time and became less active throughout the day even though we had them exercise at normal times and gave them the same amount of calories. These "clock genes" that seem to be regulated by strong regulators of our daily schedule such as exercise, sleep, and eating work best when everything is synchronized together. For example when traveling a powerful way to "reset" your clock genes is to exercise at a normal morning time as soon as possible when you arrive at your new destination, however even then it can take several days to adjust. These mice were never able to adjust to the altered day/night schedule and this has led researchers to believe that a good night's rest, especially with a dark room, can be a powerful way to help people maintain a healthy weight.

This research builds on previous research studies where night shift workers were shown to have higher rates of obesity than day shift workers. It highlights for these individuals that perhaps putting significant effort into mimicking the night-time may go a long way towards actually reducing the risk of obesity in these individuals.

In all, according to Fonken, it is important to establish daily habits that fit into your life and make you happy, while it may seem like an old wives tail your mother used to tell you, modern research now supports it more and more.
