Losing Baby Weight - When Should I Do Exercises After Pregnancy?

After giving birth, most new mothers immediately (well maybe not immediately) begin thinking about losing baby weight

. At this stage it's important for you not to have any false expectations; after all it took 9 months to grow your body for your full term baby so losing baby weight is not going to happen overnight. And some new moms may not be able to lose all the baby weight that they gained during pregnancy. Having a baby physically makes changes to your body and you may end up with some love handles you didn't have before.

So what is the best way for "losing baby weight"?

Firstly you need time to recover from the delivery especially if you had surgery, stitches or other complications so don't be in too much of a rush to get your figure back, it may take several months and you may even get some unknowing comments such as "when's the baby due" which could upset you.

Don't allow yourself to get discouraged or depressed about losing baby weight, have a plan and stick to it.


1. Talk to your family's health care provider or your doctor about what you should do for losing baby weight. He or she will help you understand what's best and when you can safely start an exercise program.

2. Have a healthy diet, cutting back on food isn't necessarily the right approach, you need to eat the right foods to give you the stamina you need for caring for the extra love in your life - your new baby.

3. Breastfeed your baby if you can but don't feel bad if you can't. My daughter really wanted to breastfeed her second child but it didn't work out for her, whereas my daughter-in-law has no problems at all. What's important for you and your baby is being healthy. Making milk and nursing your baby does burn calories and is one of the advantages of breastfeeding.

4. Start an exercise routine - with interrupted sleep due to those frequent feeding times for your baby, you may feel too tired to even think about exercises after pregnancy. But start with easy exercise - walking, take your baby out for regular walks in your pram or stroller. As a proud new mother, walking in the fresh air is great for you and your baby.

5. As you become fitter you can increase the frequency, duration and intensity of your exercise routine, add other exercises for trimming back your tummy and making those love handles less noticeable.

All mothers have to deal with losing baby weight, exercises after pregnancy combined with a healthy diet are the best way to do so.


While losing baby weight might not be easy; if you take the time to do exercises after pregnancy the right way it is definitely achievable. There is no quick fix, but you will definitely see results quite quickly if you stick to your plan.

And remember baby weight is a completely natural part of life and it happens to every woman who has a baby.
