Losing Cognitive Function

Cognitive function is how well our brain works. Forgetfulness is the most common form of cognitive decline. Unfortunately, losing cognitive function is not a normal part of aging. People joke about their senior moments, where they cannot find their glasses so they can find their car keys.

These days, studies show that one in four older adults do experience every increasing cognitive decline. Dementia or Alzheimer's can result, much to the alarm of family members.

Experts recommend physical activity and exercise to prevent and slow cognitive decline. Eating more vegetables and essential fatty acids can also partner well with increased activity experts add. Walking is one of the best and cheapest forms of exercise and besides getting a pedometer, there are a number of wonderful strategies to adding more steps to your day. The first, of course is getting out of that easy chair and putting on your coat and shoes.

Next time you go to the grocery store, walk around the store several times before you pick up your groceries, or go for a walk in the mall. If you have a department store near you, you can park at the other end of the parking lot and get a good half hour walk in, just hoofing it around the department store. There are many strategies to get in more walking.

As adults get older they don't pay attention as much to what they eat. In our local area, I see a lot of seniors in restaurants eating their meals there. While this may be a good thing for those who don't cook or have the energy to cook, the food may be higher in fat, salt and sugar than most people need. Wise choice of menu items is important to stay healthy and maintain proper brain function. But, I must admit, it is better than tea and toast that I know some older adults resort to when they are hungry.

By watching your diet and getting some exercise, you can maintain your cognitive function well into your senior years. You'll be able to find your glasses and your car keys.
