Low Intensity Green Light Therapy Lamps Effective For Non Seasonal Affective Disorders

For over a decade Sunnex Biotechnologies low-intensity Lo-LIGHT therapy lamp has

been used to safely and comfortably provide the benefits of LIGHT THERAPY for sleep and mood disorders including SAD (also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder or Winter Depression) to numerous customers.

More recently, peer reviewed clinical studies have found that the use of Lo-LIGHT therapy lamps provides dramatic benefits in the treatment of non-seasonal depression. A study using Sunnex Biotechnologies patented low intensity green light technology published in the American Medical Association's authoritative journal on psychiatry, the Archives of General Psychiatry (soon to be re-named JAMA Psychiatry), in which the authors, Benedetti et al, stated that the side-effect-free treatment of "repeated total sleep deprivation (TSD) and LIGHT THERAPY has been shown to cause rapid and sustained antidepressant effects that occur in a matter of hours or days."

In an earlier study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, Benedetti et al, using this one week treatment protocol with repeated sleep deprivation and low-intensity green LIGHT THERAPY, found that the majority of patients suffering from bipolar depression who did not have a history of drug resistance remained symptom free for the entire 9 month follow-up period. Other studies have found that cessation of LIGHT THERAPY in the treatment of non-seasonal depression resulight therapys in a more rapid relapse, indicating that the relief from bipolar depression resulight therapying from the GreenLIGHT/sleep deprivation protocol would have been further improved if the use of low intensity green LIGHT THERAPY lamps been maintained after the intense one week sleep deprivation /light therapy protocol.

The lead author of these studies, Dr. Benedetti, describes how light therapy extends the very transient antidepressant effect of sleep deprivation from one day to several months or longer in an article published in Science on the 25th anniversary of the first paper on the use of light therapy for the treatment of winter depression. This ability of light therapy to prolong the antidepressant effects of sleep deprivation is also discussed by Benedetti et al in the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews.

In the study for which light therapy was found to be effective for prolonged periods for the treatment of bipolar depression Benedetti et al. explained his choice to use low intensity green light rather than bright light therapy lamps in studies on bipolar depression was to avoid eye damage in patients taking lithium, which can increase the susceptibility to retinal damage from high intensity light. In an earlier study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, Benedetti et al used Lo-LIGHT GreenLIGHT therapy lamps from Sunnex Biotechnologies to treat patients suffering with severe Major Depression. That study also found dramatic benefits from the use of Lo-LIGHT therapy lamp in combination with an antidepressant medication. In that paper the authors described the importance of low intensity green light to avoid retinal damage, as the antidepressant medications being used by some of the subjects in the study are photosensitizing and increase the risk of retinal damage from blue light exposure.
