MMA Training 101 – Knockout Your Opponent

The most powerful weapon most mixed martial arts fighters rely on is the power in their fist

. Fights that turn into slugfests are very entertaining but if it's a slugfest, then someone isn't throwing an effective enough punch. Watching champion fighters in the cage, they usually knock their opponents out clean. Here are some ways to develop that knockout punching power that we're talking about.

Train Your Core.

The core of our bodies is that most important part of our body for every move we make in the cage. Most of the power in a punch comes from the rotary power in a fighter's core.

Utilize exercises in training that can give you extra power in your core. Using medicine balls and doing side by side crunches can develop your core very well.

Hit the Heavy Bag.

Your best friend, besides members at your club, should the heavy bag. You should use the heavy bag more and more every day.

Use 14-16 ounce gloves when hitting the bag, as it can beat you up if you use anything smaller when training as much as we're talking about.

Rinse and repeat

You need to train harder then the person next to you. More and more you need to train hitting the bag. Once or twice a week will not be enough.

This is to be done outside of your regular club training. When increasing speed, make sure you don't sacrifice technique or power.

Building a powerful punch comes with time and persistent training. A quality MMA training program will contribute to developing these areas outside of the club you are training at.
