What historians believe about Ootys various names is that the British could not pronounce the name Udagamandalam therefore they began calling it as Ootacamund, and later on christened a short name for this too and hence the name Ooty was created. The history of Ooty is very rich as it was once upon a time the Summer Capital of the Presidency of Madras.

Ooty is located at an approximate height of 7,500 feet above sea level. The most important aspect about Ooty is that it is located at the tri junction of Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Kerala. The people of Ooty are very diverse in their culture due to its proximity to 3 different states on its sides. Lofty mountains, dense forests, great lakes, sprawling grasslands and miles of eucalyptus trees and tea gardens greet the travelers en route to Ooty. The best thing about Ootys roads is that they are very well maintained, making your journey by road a very memorable one without the discomfort of bad roads. There are various buses that ply between Ooty and all the surrounding cities such as Bangalore, Chennai, Pondicherry, Salem and many other small and big cities and towns nearby. There is bus service within regular intervals in order to make traveling in and out of Ooty easy and tension free.

You can also get to Ooty by flight by disembarking at the nearest airport that is located at Coimbatore. There is regular bus service between the airport and Ooty that visitors could use to get to Ooty. There is a lot said about Ootys fantastic train service between this hill station and Chennai, it is supposed to have one of the most beautiful scenic beauties that one can see while on the journey. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) that carries visitors from Chennai to Ooty is also considered to be one of the oldest in India and is has also been declared a World Heritage Site in July 2005 by UNESCO.
