Undoubtedly a source of life for the beautiful island of Sri Lanka, the Mahaweli River is the island's longest river with the largest drainage area. This major water tributary is 335 kilometers long covering approximately one fifth of the island of Sri Lanka. Also known as the Mahaweli Ganga, its name when translated from the local language of Sinhala into English means the great sandy river'. This flow of water is a major lifeline to many of the dry zones of the island and is significant contributor to Sri Lanka's hydro power generation. Considered to be a geological blessing, the river has also greatly helped in the development of the nation as a whole.

The flow of the Mahaweli River is an interesting one that meanders through various paradisiacal areas of the island. Its voyage begins from the Hatton Plateau which is located along the hills in the western region of Sri Lanka. The flow of water from here is fed by a tributary stream of the Kotmale River which is also known as the Kotmale Oya. The stream of water then flows into a region dominated by rubber and tea plantations before making a turn to the east to meander through the hilly area of Kandy. From here, this water source flows into Trincomalee in the northern part of the island before making its way into the Bay of Bengal.

The constant flow of water from the Mahaweli River into the area of Trincomalee has made the Trincomalee harbour one of the finest deep sea harbours to be found anywhere in the world. Many of the areas through which the river flows have been dammed for irrigation purposes as many of these regions are considered to be dry zones with little rainfall. The hydroelectricity power generated through the plants set up along the water course of the Mahaweli supplies over 40% of the island's electricity.
