Maintain Focus and Attention to Succeed
When you're not focused, you'll stop paying attention. When you stop paying attention, you'll lose focus.
A few years ago, when I was moving out of the area, I went through a major housekeeping exercise with my business. Turns out, I was paying for seven different websites and I was only using two of them. The sites were costing me a couple of hundred dollars each month.
How did that happen? Was I out to lunch, or what?
Well, a little lunch, a little what. I had all seven sites hosted by the same provider, with whom I was quite happy. Unfortunately, because of some weird accounting practices, three sites were billed in a bundle and the others were billed in two separate bundles. The charges appeared on my credit card as three different accounts. That's not all that strange I suppose, but if you aren't vigilant, as I obviously was not, you can end up paying out a lot of money.
I'd lost focus and my attention had drifted.
Look Through the Correct Lens
If you ever have to wear bifocals, you'll find that it takes a while to get used to looking through the correct part of your lenses. Until you get the hang of it, shifting your gaze between the two parts of the glasses can make you seasick.
In business, likewise, it's sometimes tough for people to make the shift from big picture thinking to detail orientation and vice versa. Some people just can't do it.
If you can't multi-task between the general and the specific, you'll need to find somebody who can take over the tasks that you can't seem to handle. This can either be an employee or an independent professional, such as a bookkeeper, an accountant, an office manager, or a marketing consultant.
You must stay focused on your core business.
I had created half a dozen related sites that I hoped would feed visitors to each other site. Unfortunately, the maintenance of these sites became a big chore and ultimately I was unable to keep up with all the work. After all, I still had to generate revenue!
Even related endeavors can become distractions from your core business. It's not to say that you shouldn't be open to new opportunities, but most viable opportunities appear when you've already got a healthy business whose cash flow and profits can help support a new endeavor.
Cut back on extraneous offerings that might have seemed essential to your success at one time. That means reviewing your processes to make sure that you are focused on providing one core service or product, with as much quality as possible.
Your vision must be narrowly defined. Focused.
Attention Please
Attention, in the way I'm using the word, refers to the details of your business. I failed to pay attention to my business, and, as a consequence, lost money that could have been used more effectively.
I allowed myself to get lazy and sloppy about all these web sites, always thinking that I'd get to this one or that one next week, or the week after. The sites became another thing to worry about and procrastinate on.
Sometimes a lack of attention to details is how we let ourselves off the hook.
When you over-commit, whether by taking on too many customers, complex projects beyond your abilities, or attempting too much infrastructure change, you're taking on big responsibilities. These generate anxiety. The number of tasks you need to do rises exponentially. You can easily overextend yourself emotionally and financially. Your basic psychological reaction will be to drive yourself even harder or to simply collapse.
Take a step back and make sure that you are doing exactly what you want to be doing. Are you working effectively?
Simplify
Simplify your business. Large corporations often require their managers to attend mandatory retreats where they engage in a variety of activities including the exploration of the company mission, vision statements, and team building exercises. This helps the top brass align their thinking around simple concepts that are actionable.
At least once a quarter, spend one work day out of the office, focused on assessment. If you have employees, get them involved. Spend a couple of hours brainstorming ideas on how to get back to your core business and how to focus and pay attention to that core business.
Make a simple list of answers to these questions:
What is my business purpose?
Who are my customers?
How do I communicate with prospects and customers?
How do I get paid?
Once you answer these questions, you might not have any other questions. Yo
