Maintaining Your Pond: Vital Koi Pond Supplies
Koi ponds can be used to improve the landscape of your garden as well as provide enjoyment for their owner. The calming sound of flowing water brings a sense of relaxation and tranquility to the landscape, but most people don't realize how much work maintaining a koi fish pond requires.
Several steps need to be taken to keep the pond running well and ensuring the koi living in it stay healthy. When maintaining your Koi fish pond, make sure you have the following supplies on hand.
To enhance the beauty of your pond, add in a fountain or waterfall feature to the Koi pond. This also aerates the water and adds in more oxygen for the koi fish. The water filter is also an essential part that plays a key role in the wellbeing of the koi. The filter removes pollutants and other chemicals from the water, providing clean water for your fish to live in.
Generally, Koi ponds are large in size, therefore, a water pump is needed for water circulation, since the filter cannot carry out the job of moving all the water itself. Even if you have a waterfall or fountain, it will not stir and circulate the water well enough for the filter to remove pollutants completely.
Make sure to invest in a good pump and are taking all the necessary measures for the wellness of your koi fish.
Koi need water of a high quality to remain healthy. To keep the water clean and of high quality, make sure you keep some vital supplies on hand. When the water level of the pond starts getting low, you can add water from your garden hose. However, this will also add chlorine to the water, which is dangerous for the koi.
Keep a dechlorinator close by to add to the water to eliminate the chlorine and other harmful chemicals. Water test kits, available at pet supply stores, should be used regularly to keep track of the water's pH level and nitrate level.
Adding in a small quantity of baking soda or special pond salt into the water will help to keep the pH or irregular nitrate normal.
Since koi can only handle a few hours of sunlight a day, many people prefer to build their pond under the protective shade of a tree. The tree also protects the koi from predators like birds, who cannot easily see koi when flying overhead because of the tree.
Although it provides a lot of protection, the tree will litter the pond with dead leaves, twigs and debris. Always keep a pond skimmer close by to remove debris from the pond and keep the water clean.
You can also use a bird net to protect the pond, and this will also collect debris for you so that you can remove it easily and regularly.
Ponds often form dirty looking foam on top from constant aeration of the water as well as dirt and debris. Invest in a foam remover made specifically for ponds to eliminate this and keep your pond looking beautiful.
Make sure your foam remover is safe to use for your fish, and also remember to use a small quantity whenever needed.
