Major Myths in Network Marketing (Part III): Networking Marketing Is Not About Sales

Major Myths in Network Marketing (Part III): Networking Marketing Is Not About Sales

by Jason-Dennis Stewart

Many network marketers make a habit of advertising their opportunities as having nothing to do with actual sales of a product or service. They will tell you that they are merely "recommending" or "sharing" something they use ,and they believe that it would help those around them. They will try to equate the "recommending" of the products or services that they promote with recommending a movie that they have seen or a musical group that they enjoy. Many new network marketers are taught that people in all walks of life "recommend" products and services everyday and that being a network marketer is just an extension of doing what people do everyday anyway, only now they are getting paid for it.

The likely explanation for this type of reasoning is that if it were advertised that there was actually "sales" involved in network marketing, then many potential prospects would run for the hills. Let's face it, there are many people out there who do not even like saying the word "sales"! The entire concept of "selling" something to another person scares them to death! In reality, those types of people should not fear the word "sales", they should actually embrace it, and there is a very simple reason why

The reason is: WE ARE ALL INVOLVED IN SALES.

Yes, it's true. We are all salespeople in one way or another. Now, we all are not salespeople on a commercial level, nor do we all get paid for our selling, but I repeat, we are ALL in involved in sales. If you have ever applied for a job, you were "selling" yourself to that company in the hopes that they would hire you. If you have ever applied to a college or a university, you submitted to that institution every positive thing that you believed would entice that college or university to choose you as a student. If you are in a relationship with a significant other, most likely you tried to impress that significant other to some extent, and you successfully got that other person to recognize the value in having a relationship with you. To put it simply, you were selling yourself to them. The biggest thing to remember about all of this is that, in all of these instances, it is completely OK to sell! Selling is the only way to achieve a desirable circumstance in many instances, whether that circumstance be a financial one or otherwise.

The biggest reason why promoting a network marketing product or opportunity is not simply "sharing" or "recommending" is because, as a representative of the parent company, you stand to gain financially from your "recommendation". That clearly means that your opinion is biased. Let's be honest, would you be "recommending" the product or service at all if you weren't hoping to make a sale or add that person to your downline as a new business partner? You are only promoting your product or service because you have something to gain by doing the promoting. This is selling, plain and simple. However, you don't need to avoid the topic of sales or be ashamed of selling. To the contrary, most high income earners in most any industry are EXCELLENT at sales. There is really no other way to show the marketplace your talents, products, or services. If the marketplace does not know that your talents, products, or services exist, they obviously cannot pay you for them.

The moral of this story is to embrace the idea of sales and marketing. Moreover, take the time to become an excellent salesperson and marketer.
