Though success can happen sometimes, it is just not the norm. If you are offering a product that everyone needs, or your friends and family tend to have the same interests as you, then you're lucky. But this won't happen all the time.
There are many problems with traditional MLM companies that instruct you to sell to those closest to you. The reason for this is because your friends and family members often have very different interests than you do. Because of this, they are not a warm market at all. A better term for them is cold, because they may have no personal interest or need for the product you're selling.
Many new MLM marketers don't realize that once they've reached the bottom of their list of friends and family members, there is nowhere else they will be able to go for leads, without spending some money on marketing and advertising. You will either have to buy leads; print out promotional material; or hire an expert. Most new marketers can't afford to do this, and go out of business quite quickly.
One thing that new MLM recruits should understand is that the more interesting that your message is to your target prospect, the more likely that person will become a customer. New MLM sales people should be taught how to target customers that might be truly interested in their products first and foremost.
As an MLM seller, when it comes to business cards and flyers, it is all about numbers. If you are not at a point where you can afford to print out and distribute several thousand business cards and flyers every week, then you won't be able to be successful with this method. Traditional MLM companies don't encourage new recruits to have realistic expectations.

Most people would not telemarket if their lives depended on it, so they need effective training so that they can find new prospects. One of the main problems with traditional MLM companies is that some of them have not evolved with the times.
