Make Sure Your Wiper Blades Are Up To The Winter Challenge Ahead
They're only thin slivers of rubber, but they're one of the most important
, and hard-working components on your car outside anything to do with the engine.
I'm talking about your wiper blades, and no doubt, over the course of this less than sparkling summer, you've had cause to use them more than usual.
That makes it all the more important that they're checked over before the onset of the really rough weather which might lie ahead, because you don't want to find out that they're not up to the job when it's too late and the snow and ice are accumulating in front of your eyes.
According to some sources, there has already been a surge in the sales of wiper blades because of our miserable weather this year. But if you've left it until now to check the condition of yours and change them, there is still a lot you can do to improve your driving conditions, and yours and your passengers' safety, this winter.
Flat-bladed wipers are the latest type to earn praise from many motoring industry experts. Because they have a long metal shaft which supports the blade along its whole length, they help keep the amount of blade which is in contact with the windscreen consistent when this is not the case, this is the cause of those unsightly lines which can appear on your windscreen, and hamper your vision of the road ahead as well as being potentially illegal.
It has also been found that many motorists waste money every year on replacing blades, in the mistaken belief that they are not doing their job properly, when the only problem is that they have not been fitted correctly in the first place, thereby causing uneven wear and marks on the screen.
This is why it is a good idea to pick a type of blade which is specifically designed to fit your car. The instructions for many of the proprietary blades sold by car parts retailers suggest that they can be fitted to a wide variety of models, but given that each car manufacturer builds its cars to its own totally unique a specifications, there is usually some compromise between sizes, so that the makers of these universal parts can sell them to as many people as possible.
So you need to ask whether a particular blade, or blade and arm assembly, is of the type which was originally intended to be fitted to your car. That way, you can be sure of getting the most use out of them this winter, and of them causing the least damage to your windscreen.
