Make Your Divorce Lawyer Happy: Avoid These Mistakes

It's not unique to the arena of family law, but many divorce lawyers have found themselves

worrying more about the mistakes their own client will make during a case than anything the other spouse will bring to court. It is an unfortunate fact that many people wind up sabotaging their own case inadvertently, and this may be truer in matters where emotions run high than in any other circumstances. Certainly, there are few cases where passion runs as high and emotions threaten to spill over the rim as those centering around the dissolution of a marriage. Keep a clear head and avoid these mistakes.

Use Your Children as Pawns

As any divorce lawyer can attest, this happens far too often. In the quest to "win at all costs", parents who should know better begin using their own children as bargaining chips in the war between the sexes. This is a mistake for several reasons, the toll it takes on your children's lives probably being the most significant. But it can also backfire spectacularly. When a judge gets a whiff of this sort of callous maneuvering, he won't hesitate to punish either party for their role in the battle. If custody has become an issue in the proceedings, this could very well be the mistake that costs you the fight.

Involving a New Relationship

There's nothing inherently wrong with moving on to your next relationship quickly. Everyone is different when it comes to their emotional health and no one can really judge you for who you fall in love with, when, or how it happens. That said, people are judging. They are judging all of the time and at least one of those people will eventually have a judgment that affects your life substantially. If you insist on bringing your new boyfriend/girlfriend to court proceedings, it could be seen as "flaunting". It may serve to fan flames better left to smother. Don't make things worse by being petty.

Bringing Your Children to Meetings

It's tough to find a sitter, of course, especially during the day. Any divorce lawyer with a measure of tact is going to be too polite to say anything outright to a mom or dad who needs to bring their children to a meeting or into court with them. But they will be thinking it. There are a few reasons why children should not be present. One, they act as a distraction and there is business to conduct. Two, they may hear things they shouldn't be privy to. If at all possible, find a good daycare.
