Make Your Network Work For You
It takes time to develop networks but once you have established one
, it is one resource that you would find extremely useful. In fact, many people turn to their established networks when they are looking for work or would like to change work. The challenge therefore is how you can maintain the network or keep it strong. Simply collecting color business cards and attending networking events do not increase the likelihood that these contacts can help you in the future. To get the benefits of your network you must know how to make your network work for you and how you can work for your network.
The most valuable tip I can tell you to make your network for you is this: offer to help others in the network first. And then you can expect them to return the favor. In networking events, try to offer solutions or mention job openings to newly met contacts. You may also refer your new contacts to a colleague who can help. This way, you start a relationship. Needless to say, relationships are the foundation of a good network.
After exchanging your business card printing, make it a point that your first call or contact with your new contact is a social call. This way you can remind your new contact about your interaction and how you can collaborate. What you want to do here is gain credibility. You must be perceived as someone who can be counted on someone who keeps appointments and promises or willing to go out of his or her way to help a contact.
On the other hand, you can kill a budding relationship by being perceived as a freeloader. Some contacts only remember their network if they need something. They would only call their contacts to ask for help. These freeloaders are 'takers' but not in any way 'givers'. They may be assisted once or thrice, but more than this, they become parasites. Contacts will start avoiding them. The mere mention of their names is enough for them to hide or pretend to be busy. As a general rule, never be perceived as someone who always asks for assistance. The relationship should be mutually beneficial.
Networks make for a brighter future. You should find ways to nurture the network in order for it to be strong. You can do this by thinking beyond the current need. Rather, focus on the importance of ensuring long-term credibility. Credibility can be built through a long lasting relationship that is based on trust.
