Making A Great First Impression

Although you try not to judge a book by its cover

, your first instinct is to do just that. As humans we are very visual creatures. And although prejudice has a lot more negative connotative meanings nowadays, if you think about it stripped down to its denotative essence, pre-judging something is a bit of an evolutionary survival technique. That isn't to say that basing your ideas solely on prejudice is acceptable, in fact, it is quite the opposite.

Although survival may be a bit drastic in our society, we do make first impressions upon meeting a new person. This is an important moment in time and can help or hinder the relationship you are attempting to forge, whether it be romantic, social, or business. There are ways to make a good first impression if you keep these things in mind.

Smile. There is nothing more inviting than a genuine smile and nothing more frightening than a fake one. Smiling is not one of those fake it til you make it kind of things. So whatever you need to do, dig deep to some beautiful childhood memory if you have to, and flash those pearly whites. On an important side note check the breath. If you plan on eating garlic for lunch, keep the breath mints handy.

Eye contact. If they are the windows to the soul, how does it reflect on you if you are constantly looking down or away. Keep steady eye contact, but don't stare. Follow the conversation with your eyes, the other party will see that you are actively engaged by your non verbal communication.

Listen. Speaking of communication, remember that a conversation has two equally important parts. Talking and Listening Talking seems to be fine for most, unless you are very shy. And if you are, relax, they are just words. But is seems that sometimes people forget to listen. Take time to think and consider what is being said and don't just blurt out the first thing that pops into your head just so you can be the one talking again.

Appearance: This isn't the place to discuss the relativity of the concept of beauty, but just to focus on how your present yourself. Clean body, clean clothes, a physical appearance of having it together can imply that you can mentally and emotionally keep it together as well. Just keep your audience in mind. If you plan on picking the future in laws up in your old beat up jalopy, requesting a limousine service may be a better option, no offense to your car.

Meeting someone for the first time can create a lot of pressure. Remember these tips, relax, and most importantly, be yourself.
