Making It Simple Spells Success For It Managment Companies

Each year Network World compiles a list of IT management start-ups to watch during the following year

. The list of companies to watch in 2010, as well as those listed in 2008 (to watch in 2009) is made up of companies that share a mission to reduce the complexity of IT management, mainly around application monitoring, virtualization management and cloud computing.

The emergence of virtualization management is a natural progression. Virtualization has rapidly grown to mainstream use over just the past few years and it's become quite clear that monitoring virtual assets is just as important - if not more - and more complex than managing physical assets. To monitor the virtual environment you need to view virtual assets in their entirety - across the environment, in relation to physical servers on the network and in relation to themselves. Both environments must be seen and evaluated in context of each other.

Management software needs to be aware of its environment and now it must be able to adapt to manage applications and services in these hybrid on-premise/cloud computing environments"

If you are using separate tools for monitoring - one for the physical environment and a second for the virtual environment - what are you thinking? If you're not tracking both environments at the same time with the same tool, then you don't have the true visibility you need. As cloud computing (public, private and hybrid) continues to gain momentum, we expect that we'll see more and more start-ups addressing cloud issues. It's all about simplifying the complexities of IT.

The class of 2008 did very well during a tough 2009 - probably since they focus on some aspect of virtualization monitoring, helping track the cost and value of virtualization and cloud deployments, and network security. They are all still in business (one was acquired) and doing quite well - four received funding ranging from $2 to $14 million; one signed exclusive global licensing deals with Microsoft and Cittrix; and one has quadrupled its client base.
