However old your child is, invariably they will need somewhere to do their homework and reflect on what they have learnt during the day. As your child gets older they will need more organisation to balance work from each of the subjects, and they will need a space for them to work effectively while in relative comfort.

You need to think about where they do their work currently. If they take themselves off and work quietly, then making an area in their bedroom or the spare room where they can work is ideal, but if they need to be around others and have you on hand for any questions they may have, then setting them apart from everyone may not be the best option. If your child is the latter, then see if you can find some storage space for them to keep their books so they can easily do their work in that room, but it won't impact greatly on the functionality. So if they use the dining room, create a way they can do their work happily, but when you have a dinner party people aren't resting on science tomes.

Find out what they like about the spot they work in currently, and see if you can replicate that when creating an area for them. It might be that they like the space to spread out, or the quiet of a room, so try to find something that will still suit them.
