Male and Female Hair Loss - The Anger Felt in the 2nd Stage of Hair Loss Grief
Male and Female hair loss (all types of Alopecia/hair loss) can trigger a chain reaction of negative emotions - namely anger! The aim of this article is to help you recognise that it is natural to feel anger towards your hair loss and the people around you. The important thing is to channel the anger into action so that anger does not start sabotaging your relationships; work and life in general. This article is the 2nd part in the 5 Stages Of Hair Loss Grief series
Anger? Absolutely! Why shouldn't you feel this way! What a cruel injustice life has thrown at you! Hair loss is taking away your looks and a part of your identity; it is a form of facial disfiguration. The anger can trigger questions like why me? Why now? What did I do to deserve this?
Anger is a survival tool and is usually in response to pain - physical or psychological. So it is no wonder, therefore, that you are angry. You are in pain for your physical and psychological loss.
Your anger may also appear as stress. When we are stressed or angry over pro-longed periods of time our body goes into 'fight or flight' as previously mentioned in the denial stage. 'Fight or flight' is also an evolutionary response to danger or threat. When we are faced with danger our nervous system shifts, we are on high alert, our senses are heightened; adrenalin starts pumping; the blood that was pumping around our body and into our digestive system for growth and repair has now been channelled to our muscles. We are ready to fight or run. When you are continually stressed or angry, your body is not growing and healing, therefore how do you expect your hair to re-grow?
It is easy to see how stress and anger can make us ill. It literally changes our biochemical functions and neural receptors and can lead to permanent damage and changes to organs which is the starting point for disease.
Remember a small amount of anger drives us forward to take action - this is channelled anger; 'good' anger. However, beware of prolonged niggling and frustrated anger feelings.
Fear is usually felt before anger. When you first noticed your hair loss, you may have been fearful of what might happen; what people might think; scared that your compromised looks will make you unattractive or unloved or perhaps you are just fearful of external factors like the wind blowing your wispy hair or being in a confined space where people easily can see your scalp.
Male and female hair loss sufferers are generally on edge constantly; fearful of the world, the fear becoming so consuming until it leads to irritation, frustration and then anger. Male and Female Hair loss sufferers report to be angered by daily struggles and worries, particularly the ignorance of people staring or talking to their heads. There is also a lot of pent up anger felt in relation to the way people treat hair loss sufferers differently. Sufferers often feel frustrated and angered by the way their partners or loved ones don't seem to understand, it is felt that they are insensitive to their situation.
Use your energy from the anger to take charge of your life and your hair loss, but without letting the anger consume you. It would be very easy to slip into obsessive thinking, perhaps keeping you researching and scouring the internet into the early hours. When you are feeling angry and stressed it is difficult to switch off particularly at night. Sleepless nights can also inhibit your healing in the long term.
Tips and action steps
Use your energy to research your medical and cosmetic options. Don't let it get worse to the point where you won't leave the house.
Bring down your anger and stress levels by trying a few rounds of basic EFT by yourself or have a one-to-one session where you will be moved through the anger stage and into proactive action.
Write your feelings down! Keep a journal so that you can rant when you feel angry and then reflect when you are feeling sad and down. Get to understand your reactions and what triggers you.
Let off some steam maybe with exercise, it is a good way to use the angry energy and will also raise your endorphins and make you feel happier.
Talk to someone that has been through it or is going through it. Whether that is talking in chat rooms or to someone directly. Having someone that understands your plight and can listen in an empathetic, not as you perceive 'pathetic' way, can help to release your anger

Turn negative energy into positive energy. Have you ever noticed how when you radiate a particular negative emotion you start to attract bad things; things start going wrong; you have less control; you have an accident; someone hurts you unintentionally yet it feels very intentional; there are a spiral of problems instead of resolution and happiness. We are all made up of energy, if your energy is blocked and is negative, you will attract more of the same. EFT helps to re-balance your energy and shift your focus, helping you start to radiate a positive energy.
