Mangalore - By The Sea
The port city of Mangalore is found on the coast of the Arabian Sea and flanked by the Western Ghats
. Located in the Dakshin Kannada district of Karnataka, Mangalore is named after the local Hindu Goddess, Mangaladevi who is the Goddess of Good Fortune. Mangaladevi is the presiding deity of Mangalore. Mangalore is also considered to be an ancient city, where sages like Vyasa, Vasishta, Kanva and Vishwamitra are believed to have spent their days meditating amongst the Sahyadri Mountains.
Mangalore was called by various names during different periods of history. In the era of Pandya rule, during 715 AD, Mangalore was known as Mangalapuram; during the 11th century is it was called Manjarur. Mangalore was under the rule of various dynasties like the Kadambas, Vijayanagar dynasty, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas and the Hoysalas among others.
Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan were the famous rulers who belonged to Mangalore. A cause of the constant contention between them and British, Mangalore was finally taken over by the British in 1799. The Portuguese also ruled over Mangalore.
At present, Mangalore is one of the major and busiest ports of India along the Arabian Sea. Currently, the Mangalore port handles more than three-quarters of India's exports and most of its cashew exports. Mangalore port also acts as the staging port for naval traffic along the Malabar Coast. The topography of Mangalore is enriched by the coconut palms that dot its landscape and also by the hills, streams, beaches and temples.
The major religious attractions of Mangalore are Sri Gokarnanatheshwara Temple and Kadri Sri Manjunatha Temple (built in 1086 AD). The Manjunatha temple it is situated on the highest elevation of Mangalore and offers a panoramic view of the surroundings. It is also home to India's finest bronze statue of the God Lokeshwara. The St. Aloysius Chapel in Mangalore is famous for housing some exquisite frescos painted by Jesuit priest Antonio Moscheni.
The Light House Hill Garden built by Hyder Ali, and Sultan Battery, a watchtower made of black stones, built by Tipu Sultan are also famous attractions of Mangalore.
The Mahatma Gandhi museum of Mangalore has dedicated sections for Zoology and Anthropology. The Bejai Museum is well known for its anthology of antiquities, wooden carvings, stone sculptures, porcelain and a bronze bell with a miniature Lakshmi shrine among others.
Other important attractions in and around Mangalore are Karkala, Venur, Ullal Jama Masjid and Moodabidire, to name a few. Durga Parameshwari Temple near Mangalore, situated on the banks of River Nandini, is thronged by devotees during the Laksha Deepotsava.
Mangalore is well connected to other parts of the country by road, rail and air. The best time to visit Mangalore is from December to February.
