Many People Could Claim To Have Invented Radio

If you ask a lot of people who invented radio, most of them would say that it was Marconi. As with a lot of inventions, it is not absolutely certain as a number of people were involved in its development. We are very pleased that someone did though when we listen to our portable DAB radio nowadays.

As early as the 1830s Joseph Henry was talking about waves and in the 1840s Michael Faraday had the idea while on his golf course that light moved as waves but it was not until the late 1870s that David Hughes actually transmitted some signals over a couple of hundred yards by use of electromagnetic waves.

Heinrech Hertz, around 1887, proved that radio waves were indeed formed by electromagnetic souces and he set up a machine to create and to receive these radio waves which, to this day, are still measured using his name. Hertz could well be described as the inventor of radio but he never saw it that way. He was just trying to prove a theory and did not see any commercial use of it whatsoever.

The next claimant of the title is Nikola Tesla. In the early 1890s, he was the first man to see the potential of communicating information through the air without using wires. He was the first man to get a patent for the transmission of radio waves.

In the mid 1890s the Indian physicist Jagesh Bose sent signals over a mile but he also was not interested in the commercial side of radio and never even applied for a patent on his discoveries.

Alexander Popov also in the 1890s in Russia was building a receiver which he first showed on May 7th 1895. This date became celebrated as Radio Day. In 1900 he set up a radio station.

On December 23rd 1900 another physicist, Reginald Fessenden was the first audio transmission of speech over a distance of 1 mile.

Guglielmo Marconi had been following both Hertz and Tesla for some time and he really saw the commercial possibility of the technology. He first sent waves over a distance of a mile and claimed it as his own although a lot of people think that it was a copy of Tesla's.

There is a lot of debate as to the year in which Marconi actually transmitted signals across the Atlantic but it was sometime between 1901 and 1903. He did however form the Marconi Company and took radio to the masses which is why his name is always the first that anyone thinks of.
