Marine Paintings A Good Example Of The Genre Of Nineteenth Century

In the early colonial times, Atlantic shores of Boston

, New York, Baltimore, and Charleston were the commerce hub of America. All the fishing and trading was done through these important ports of America.

During those times it was the wealthy ship owners, mariners, and merchants who would pay to have the pictures painted of the boats and activities by which they made their living. The artists in those times not only were good in painting the British and Dutch model but there were artist who specialized in Marine paintings.

The first American Marine paintings depict the ports which were views painted focusing from across the water like a view from the deck of the ship. These harbor scenes where one can see ship traffic and the other illustration of the mercantile activities along the dock which portrayed the flourishing maritime industry of America.

Marine paintings flourished throughout the nineteen century. The proud ship owners commissioned for individual portraits for their commercial vessels. The Marine painter in America became more and more skilled at precisely delineating the sailing ships and also capturing the effects of the sky and the sea water.

The Marine paintings have become such a rich reference source of minute detail aboard ship, rigging, sea conditions, and the look of the sky. The Marine paintings are such good examples of the genre, that it actually stimulates the psyche of a person observing it and evokes a deep emotion for the sea that hold as true today as it did centuries ago. The Marine paintings have so finely captured the mood of the sea and sky of that moment and the sway of the elegant ships.

As time passed on in the mid nineteenth century Marine paintings shifted the focus from man to nature. The artists no longer illustrated the commercial aspect of the harbors. The artist like John Frederick Kensett and Fitz Henry Lane worked to capture the spiritual aspect of the sea and sky. The paintings would include the ships and human figures but the true focus was on the mood of the atmosphere. These paintings are referred now as luminism that indicates a change in the prevailing attitude toward the natural world.
