Marked By Acne
I was lucky not to have acne when I was in my teens
, but many -or should I say most?- of my
friends did in different degrees of severity, some of them from a very early age and a few even
when grown into adulthood. I distinctly remember the feelings of insecurity we all had during
our adolescence, irrespective of our diverse backgrounds, education or capabilities, and how
much importance was placed in image and in social success, especially within the peer group.
It is not strange that those kids whose acne was worse, suffered more during that period.
I believe they would agree their puberty and youth, and in some cases their adult life, was
marked by acne.
Recently, respected publishers in the medical literature have pointed out that thorough
and extensive research is needed on the effectiveness of the treatments available for this
condition. So it still goes on. Cosmethic, herbal, traditional, purifying, pharmacological,
alternative, exotic, ultimate and incredible remedies are offered by doctors, chemists, the
media, relatives, friends and neighbours, in most cases to no avail. That was the impression I
got as a youngster. According to health professionals in The Lancet, there is even no serious
evidence supporting the hypotheses that factors popularly considered to be related to acne,
like diet, sunlight or hygiene, are really relevant to the disease.
Because disease it is. We are used to carefully ignore acne signs and marks in young people
-not to embarrass them more, very likely, but aren't we also used to somehow ignore it is a
medical condition? We tend to consider acne as "an adolescence thing", a sign that hormonal
and systemic changes are taking place in the body, against which there is no possible fight, but
to let them pass: "you'll grow out of it". There is surely a point of balance where we can, as
adults and health professionals (also mental health profs), pay acne the attention it deserves
without considering that with this attitude we would be turning it into a more serious motive
for image-related tortures in the teen mind.
Some hope: there are a few facts around, like the worsening of acne due to a highly glucemic
diet, the positive relation between milk and acne rate and severity, the positive effect of
physical exercise on cell cleaning and appropriate cellular function, the widely accepted
conclusion that an anaerobic bacterium species causes acne (in certain skin conditions), the
role of androgens in triggering the condition, and the well-established fact that both scarce or
excessive skin hygienic habits can worsen acne. Let's hope that further research will lead to
more facts and less improvisation, hitting the real mark.
