So you want to be a marketing consultant and are not sure where to start? You may be a recent college graduate or even a seasoned company executive struggling to find employment in this market place. There must be some company in the universe that needs marketing services. It's important to do an honest evaluation of your skills, what you can help companies with, and most importantly who you have access to.

The list of skills can be broad or specific. If someone was previously a chief marketing officer of a major corporation, they will have specific broad experience in managing a large-scale campaign across multiple mediums. However, if your experience is more specific to handling small or medium business customers then you should take that in to consideration. Sometimes a marketing consultant brings very specific expertise. For example, they may have been a search engine optimization / search engine marketing expect. They may have had experience as a television media buyer, magazine print specialist, and so forth. It's very important that you match up your skill set to the customers that you will be offering your services to. That means if you specialized in television advertising, you should not focus your efforts on small companies. It is very rare that a small company will decide to put all of their marketing dollars in the advertising medium of television.

The next consideration that a marketing consultant should consider is geography. Are you going to market your products and services to your local region, to your state, multiple states, or maybe even nationwide? How scalable are your services and are you willing to travel to meet your prospective clients? These are all very important considerations when looking at the new role you will play. Additionally, it's important to determine how much of a budget you will allocate to market yourself and your newfound consulting role. If travel and entertainment expenses are prohibitive, it might make more sense to create a product or service that will be web based and not relationship intensive in nature. A final consideration should be whom you have access to. This means that the marketing consultant should look closely at their Rolodex and determine how many companies that they already have relationships with may be interested in doing business with them. Of course, it is really important to take in to consideration whether your previous employment agreement had any restrictions in the form of a non-compete contract or clause.

After taking all of the above in to consideration, it is should become a clear path as to what services the newly minted marketing consultant will offer. Additionally, it should be clear as to whom he or she will market himself or herself to. Hopefully, the length of time from inception until services are billed is minimal and their engagement contract makes sense for both parties involved. The next challenge will be to consistently gain new clients while managing existing clients. If this is not done properly, it can create a volatile income stream for the individual.
