The Marmolada (Italian: Marmolada, Ladino: Marmoleda, the name is derived from the similarity of the rock, marble) is the highest mountain in the Dolomites. The Marmolada is a latitudinal-remitting Gratrcken, developed by the Punta Penia (3,343 m slm) on the Punta Rocca (3309m slm) and the Punta Ombretta (3,230 m slm) Pizzo Serauta (3.035 m slm) and Punta Serauta (3,069 m slm) leads. This Gratrcken breaks to the south in a closed, two kilometers wide and from up to 800 meters high cliff into Ombrettatal. On the north side of the Passo di Fedaia relatively gently sloping flank bearing the only large glacier in the Dolomites (the Marmolada Glacier della).
The legend of the Marmolada glacier
A legend explains the etiology of South Tyrol the origin of the Marmolada glacier, like this: Originally, there was no ice on the Marmolada and snow, but only fertile pastures and meadows. Before a public holiday in August, the farmers broke as usual, the hay and went to the valley to go to church. But two of the offered holiday was calm indifference, they worked through the entire holiday to get their hay into the barn to dry yet. In fact, it also began to like snow. But it snowed on and on and certainly did not stop, until finally the whole Marmolata was covered by a glacier. Another version tells of a wicked countess, who had forced the farmers to hay harvest. While the farmers were able to save themselves, the Contessa, including servants was buried by the snow. Today tourism
On the west side of the glacier is the most demanding part of the so-Dolomites mountain path runs No. 2 At the Punta Penia takes a fixed rope by Contrinhaus on the south side via Marmolada scharte and west ridge (hence the name-west ridge via ferrata). The easy but exposed climb gives hikers the opportunity to achieve even without the summit glacier equipment. A very scenic train tour takes you on the foot of the Marmolada south face of Malga Ciapela the Passo Ombretta and Contrinhaus to Alba in Canazei.
On the Marmolada there is also a cable car, the renewed in 2004 and 2005, investment leads in three sections of Malga Ciapela (1,467 m slm) through the stations Banc / Coston d'Antermoja (2,350 m) and Serauta (2,950 m) on the Punta Rocca (3,265 m). The cable car station at the War Museum in Mountain Serauta built 2.950 m above sea level is probably the highest museum in Europe. From the top station of Punta Rocca can be easily reached by a tunnel, the small rock sanctuary of Madonna della Neve, who personally consecrated by Pope John Paul II during a visit.About the Author:
