Sports are known for providing a focus around which a community can build. When it comes to building a community, few interests can match the passion and pride of martial arts. The term "martial arts" covers thousands of fighting styles that have developed in regions all around the world throughout centuries of human civilization. While many of the best-known styles practiced today began in Asia, there are distinctive versions that have arisen in even continent and region of the world. Each style has been developed and refined through the efforts of its own martial arts community. Often practitioners began their study of martial arts when they were children. Certain kinds of martial arts such as JuJutsu and Tae Kwan Do require skills that take years to develop, so they're best begun in childhood. However any martial art can be of enormous benefit to children. Martial arts provide excellent physical training that results in good cardiovascular health, strength and flexibility. Being part of a martial arts community also helps children develop mental discipline, focus, inner calm and a positive outlook on life. Becoming a martial arts student also can broaden a child's cultural horizons as well. Children learn from their Sensei (teacher) about the country or culture that produced the martial art they're studying. In addition, some martial arts are well organized, with each dojo (school) affiliated with a national or international group that sets standards for teaching and advancement. These wider organizations frequently hold gatherings and tournaments where students meet other students from around the world, and compete to win prizes and extend their skills. Since being part of a martial arts community begins with joining a local Dojo (school), it's imperative that great care be taken when choosing a martial arts school, especially for children. Teaching quality varies tremendously from school to school, as does the learning environment. Some Dojos focus exclusively on competitive, which can be too stressful for more introverted students. Other schools that focus on the physical and mental benefits of martial arts won't be challenging enough for the student intend on becoming a champion in the sport. Whichever way the child's personality tends, it's vital to find a Dojo where the student will enjoy learning martial arts and becoming part of a martial arts community. That's why prospective students, or the parents of prospective students, should research several schools or martial arts clubs before enrolling. Asking questions offers a key way to determine whether the potential student will fit into the martial arts community at the school. Besides general questions about tuition, fees, schedules and the cost of equipment, it's a good idea to ask about the Sensei's qualifications, including how many years he or she has taught and whether the teacher has studied in the country where their martial art originated. Finding a teacher who has studied with a known master of that particular martial art is a big plus. In the end, what matters most about learning martial arts are the physical and mental benefits of the sport, along with the opportunity to make new friends and be part of a larger, even global, martial arts community.
