Massage For The Body And Soul At Wat Pho

Among Thailands must-see attractions are the Grand Palace and Wat Pho

, situated next to one another on Rattanakosin Island along the Chao Phaya River. After exploring the splendor of the Grand Palace and environs, you might consider getting a Thai massage to stretch your muscles and calm your mind at Thailands most famous massage center: Wat Pho, also known as Wat Phra Chetuphon or the Temple of the Reclining Buddha.

There is probably no better introduction to the Kingdom and her history, her religion, her Monarchy, her customs and traditions, and her arts and sciences than a day or several days spent visiting these two amazing sites. And given the importance of the Buddhist wat or temple complex in most every Thais life, Wat Pho holds the key to understanding Thai culture in many important ways.

It is telling that the site of present-day Wat Pho was historically a center for meditation, yoga, and Thai massage, in existence long before Rama I moved the capital from Ayuttaya to Bangkok and began construction of the modern temple complex. It holds many honors, including that of being Thailands first university, housing the largest reclining Buddha, as well as containing the largest number of Buddha icons.

It was Rama III (1824-1851) who literally inscribed in stone writings about religion, science, and literature in order to make this knowledge public. Also depicted on the walls was all knowledge known about the ancient art of Thai massage, developed over the centuries back to the time of Gautama Buddha and his personal doctor Shivago Komarpaj, or Father Doctor, as he is affectionately known in Thai.

Students have been learning these ancient techniques of healing at the Wat Pho Thai Traditional Massage School since it opened in 1962. Here they practice what has become the distinctly Thai version of traditional massage, which incorporates meditation, acupressure, yogic stretching, deep compression, Buddhist philosophy, and increasingly more modern herbal and spa treatments.

The school is open to the public to both learn Thai massage and to receive it. Simply show up and wait your turn for a well-trained masseur starting at 8 am through 5 pm. Prices are very reasonable at about US$9 for a half hour session, or US$14 for a full hour. The more time you dedicate to the process, the more you will get out of it.

In temples throughout the Kingdom, two hours is the standard length of a proper massage, but first-timers should probably go for an hour. The masseurs will be using their hands, feet, knees, elbows, and legs to deeply penetrate your bodys deep tissues as they manipulate key therapeutic points and sen meridians or channels throughout your body.

Your masseur will want to know if you have any particular problem areas in your body so they can focus more on these issues and their correlated body points during your massage. Although famous for being rigorous, your highly qualified masseur will soon find your comfort level and muscle strength and adapt their technique to your personal condition.

The key to getting the most out of your Thai massage is surrendering to it, relaxing, and freeing your mind of all stressful thoughts, worries, and preoccupations. You will soon forget any initial discomfort you may have experienced as your mind, body, and spirit realign themselves in harmony with the moment.

You will leave feeling like a new person, and probably be motivated to seek out as many more massages as you can find throughout your journey in Thailand. Fortunately, they are available everywhere in the Kingdom, from the smallest village to the largest city, once again proving their centrality to the lives of Thais.

As for getting one back home, you may want to consider taking a course at Wat Pho with your friend or partner while in Thailand. Then, you can experience the same pleasure at home that you first experienced in Thailand, in your body and in your soul.
