Matchmakers: Back in Style

What's a Christian single guy or girl to do? Christian guys out there that want to get married

, but can't find a girl. Christian women out there wanting to get married, and can't find a guy.

Enter the matchmaker. More than computer software that matches your likes and dislikes with those of a member of the opposite sex. Instead a real live person who has your best interest at heart, and wants to see you achieve your ultimate goal of marrying that special someone.

Sure, online matchmaking sites are convenient, and have hundreds of thousands, if not millions of members to boast of. But at the end of the day, a website is only as good as its members. If the membership is composed of married people posing as single, people who are just looking for casual dating or pen pals or friendships, people lying about aspects of their identity, inactive members, members who just log on to browse profiles, or scammers, then how valuable are the sites after all? This is the beauty of matchmakers. (Ok, shake off the discomfort of hiring someone to help you find love. If you're not in school anymore, you haven't found someone at your church or your job, and you have a hard time meeting new people, it's a perfectly logical and decent path to take in your search for a spouse. It doesn't make you pathetic or desperate. It's called meeting people is hard. Period. Compound that by having to meet a Christian of the opposite sex who would be right for you, and wants to get married in the same time frame. That can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. You may not know where to begin, or the places you've already searched haven't worked. So now it's time to enlist the assistance of a personal matchmaker.)

Matchmakers meet all of their clients face to face to get to know them in person, and perform background checks, greatly minimizing your chances of beginning a relationship with a psycho. Personal matchmakers know what their clients look like today, so there's no being fooled by an outdated photo, or a photo of someone else. Matchmakers can also act as a guard keeping you from meeting someone who's already married or who isn't really looking to get married. They can also offer you general relationship advice and advice on how to put your best foot forward. An added bonus to using a personal matchmaker is that they can give you feedback from your dates, which can be a little scary, but it's extremely beneficial. Going this route can also be a good way to keep your search for a spouse somewhat private, whereas with using an online dating site you do run a slight risk that someone who knows you will accidentally stumble upon your profile. (Some websites allow non members just casually visiting the site to search through profiles. If you use an online matchmaking site, I recommend using a service that is NOT free (because having to pay filters out many casual users), and setting your profile so that it is only viewable to members.)

So, now that you're tempted to enlist the help of a matchmaker, where do you find one? Besides Googling, one suggestion is that you can visit the Matchmaking Institute's website. This is a resource for all things Matchmaking. If you complete their online form, they can connect you with a Professional Matchmaker in your area. They do this for free.

And of course, you can always go to Google Maps, type in your zip code, choose "search nearby", and type in "matchmaker". The good thing about this method, is that sometimes, you can read reviews from past clients. (This is actually a great way to find anything local.)

You could also try Superpages.com.

When deciding on a matchmaker, you may also want to check with the Better Business Bureau (http://www.bbb.org/us/Find-Business-Reviews/) to see if the ones you're considering have a BBB rating on their site, and check for client reviews online. I'm all about the customer reviews. They can save you from breaking out your credit card only to get scammed. (While writing this post, I discovered a local Christian matchmaking company which I was actually going to suggest but after reading client reviews, they were quickly scratched off of my list of recommendations.)

Alright, that's all for now. Happy searching :)
