LANCASTER - Antelope Valley Hospital will increase total pay to its employees by $3.3million in the 2000-2001 fiscal year under a budget approved Wednesday by its board of directors. The pay adjustment means a 2.5% wage hike for all employees after July 1, the beginning of the 2000-2001 fiscal year, said Paul Allemeir, the new spokesperson for AV Hospital. Larger hikes will be granted to offset a shortage of employees in jobs considered to be critical to the hospital's mission, of providing medical care, he said, citing nurses and radiology and laboratory technologists.

This year's pay increase for employees is the second under Abraham. The first, approved in July 1999, also increased total pay by $3.3million more than half the hospital's $6.2 million operating surplus for the year.

Under the new budget, RN's will receive raises of 5%, effective July 1. On January 1, those nurses will receive a second increase of 5%. The goal is to retain the nurses we have and help recruit nurses back to the Antelope Valley, Allemeir said. These increases will make us very competitive with the Los Angeles hospitals, he added.

The hospital's year-to-date income as of today could be as high as $9.9 million, Abraham estimated a sum that would be $4.4 million or 80% - greater than the $5.5 million surplus expected a year ago. The larger surplus "is attributed to managers and administrators doing an excellent job of managing costs and expenses" such as attorney and consultant fees, he said.

According to documents presented by Chief Financial Officer, Les Wong, the amount of money for attorney services has been cut by Hospital CEO Abraham from $1.7 million in fiscal year 1998-1999 to an estimated $561,000 for fiscal 2000-01.

Mathew Abraham CEO agreed to bring to the board in coming weeks detailed information on the services expected to be provided by the Outpatient Imaging Center, the cost of building the facility and the projected return on the investment.

The information will include a recommendation on whether the hospital should build a one-story imaging center or a multistory center with Doctors' offices, Abraham said.
