Medical Billing Salary - Can You Work From Home?
One of the questions I am often asked is - can you actually make a good salary working from home in medical billing
? Is it possible to be home-based? If you're making a salary, it means you're working as an employee for a medical billing business or a doctor's office or clinic if they do not send out their billing work. Most billing work is handled by the billing services businesses for many reasons. If you are working from home you would likely be working for yourself and paying yourself, not getting a salary from a company.
The software that's used costs a lot of money and takes specialized training, for one thing and may make it prohibitive. They also usually don't need to have outside employees.
If you work from home in processing insurance claims or medical billing, you have to set up a medical billing business at home. Although it's been done and is done, most billing specialists and assistants and other people who have billing training, education and experience work from billing services or large clinics that still do their billing work in-house.
One has to be careful about the ads they see promising fantastic amounts of money that one can make in medical billing. They run our local papers all the time and often are headlined insurance billing courses or schools. Yes, you can get a good job and make a good salary if you have the necessary education and training and even more with experience, but not in unrealistic amounts, so keep that in mind.
Training is relatively short compared to a lot of trades or skilled professions. You can choose from a variety of ways to get your training either online or on a campus or a trade school on campus. If you know the right schools to go to you can go online and save yourself a lot of money. You don't have to leave home, get day care if that's needed, pay for gas or bus fare and all the other costs that are necessary if you go to medical billing classes, courses or a school or trade school that is not online.
If you choose an online school, you want to make sure that you check them out carefully and get references from former students who have careers and jobs and are working now in the field. This is easy to. do. You want to make sure they are former students though and not paid by the school to give good references. You do not want to sign up for classes that you won't use or benefit from.
Of course you can always benefit by them to some degree so it's not a lost cause if you take them but it drives up the cost of your schooling or education and you probably want to keep the costs down.
So if you want to work from home know that it's unlikely you'll be able to do this unless you set up your own home-based business - something I don't recommend unless you have a lot of experience under your belt. It's not a well-known fact but there is money for online classes including medical billing classes, and if you do a lot of research, you may be able to find scholarships or grants and go free.
